To offer an update in case others have the same question(s): had zero problems bringing the cat transiting through CDG (i.e. not entering nor leaving the EU). The transit security screeners let me keep him in his carrier and send him through the xray machine, which is better than some airports where you have to hand carry the pet through the magnetometers. The AF lounge people didn't say anything when I brought him in there. The AF ticket counter and gate agents only seem concerned that the bag was under the weight limit and that the $200 fee was paid.
