I understand that if they show up for international flights with check bags 45min to an hour prior to departure that's kind of pushing it. I'm looking at worst case scenario.
AA publishes formal check-in time cutoffs. If you have not completed check-in by the published
required time, you will be denied:

Minimum check-in time for flight to/from international destinations is 60 minutes (there are some exceptions that require earlier check-in, but they do not impact your itinerary)
