Part of this plan includes never buying coach tickets on an alliance/legacy carrier where we hold no elite status - period. That's where 95% of these problems happen.
The point this was originally a tangent off of is that even with that, you can lose your "good" seats, and I gave an example of where it just happened to me -- despite status (actually top tier this year, although I was too lazy to edit it when I'll just be back at PLT next year) and booking way in advance. Indeed, the latter probably contributed to the odds of an intervening equipment swap.
