What's the point of getting onto the earlier flight if you must wait for the bag or return to the airport later to pick it up? Maybe for an upgrade, which is unlikely for a standby passenger? Better airplane? If there were a change of routing, or change from a direct flight to a connection, it could mean earning more miles.
