You were involuntary downgraded. There was a business class cabin, but it was overbooked and they chose to downgrade you. Unless you wanted to go to PHL I would have picked the direct option, which was presumably still in business class.

Since you haven't (I assume) picked the direct flight, you are entitled to downgrade compensation. You need to claim with AA, as they operated the flight and issued the ticket.
