BA, LX, LH, LOT, SK, SN, etc., on intra-european flights - seats assigned automatically at checkin, with the option of changing them then.
Then there's Easyjet which is entirely automatic assigment at time of purchase (unless you pay extra), similarly Ryanair although I don't know if they assign seats at time of purchae or at checkin. No choosing other seats without payment in any case. (Or maybe Ryanair are still pick at boarding? I've not flown them in a while.)
