T-Mobile offers a decent international program - unlimited (3G) data, and very inexpensive calls. No monthly fees, etc. However, their domestic service is awful, so back to Verizon.

Verizon offers a program ($10 per day) that would work, except that it's not offered in many of the countries I visit, China and Russia in particular.

What are my options? Specifically, I need basic data (for maps, Google translate, etc.), and usually 30 - 60 minutes of phone per trip. I'd actually be OK with getting a temporary device if it came to that.
