Thought this may be a system glitch and left it for a few days but it repeated itself today.

The per segment prices listed on the website are misleading due to UA's harebrained and half-baked attempt to show per-segment pricing. Try booking the longhaul with an open jaw between your stopovers and a separate domestic ticket.
