I think you would really be hoping for a lot, and likely to get zilch.

Can you just cancel the entire flight, buy the cheap one way out and fly home via some discount airline or miles? Or wait and hope cheaper DL inventory re-opens for the return?

There is a bit of logic to the airlines policy. They can not reprice the already flown segments so the "reprice the entire ticket" is not an option once the jouirney begins. And of course they would rather reprice all if possible for the exact reason that you are seeing.
