No, the better way is to simply
ask the passengers what they want. Those who care will tell you - AA asks that you do it 24 hours before the flight. Those who don't care will get the process that happens today.
I'm surprised more don't. Unlike Y, where demand outstrips capacity and airlines don't really have to try, there's actually some decent competition for paid J/F traffic. This simple differentiator doesn't cost the airline hardly anything.
