I've actually only been upgraded on BA when I was status-less (and never when crediting to AA rather than BAEC). But then again I was travelling WT+ to start with so the bit about that small cabin having an advantage is true.

If legroom matters, fly AA and get a MCE seat. If booze matters, BA is certainly the better choice down the back.
