Air Canada Vacations Mess-Up

Ok, this is a reasonably long story (just giving anyone that wants to read it a shot at pulling out now).

Just my quick back-story (not sure why it matters). I have been flying with AC for a little over a year. Ended up last year with 68 legs in 9 months and obviously qualified for 50k. This year I am at 40 AQS and $10k AQD and should quite easily hit SE.

A few months ago a promo came out for 7,000 AP points if you booked within a certain timeframe. The wife and I were just recently married and had done a short honeymoon in Whistler, but we wanted to do another trip as our official honeymoon, so we decided to take advantage.

We booked an all-inclusive in Cancun for 7 nights at the Oasis Sens for the end of February. The cost was approximately $3800 for the two of us. Everything about the booking was smooth and we were excited about our trip. During the time that I was booking I asked the agent if I would be able to use my E-upgrade credits for get into J and was told that I would be able to do that but that I would have to do that a few days before the flight.

Advance a few weeks and I called in to see how I would go about using my eups and I was told 'your booking class doesn't allow that'. I told her that was not what I was told originally and she told me 'I can't do anything, that is not Air Canada's fault, that is Air Canada Vacation's fault'.

So....I call ACV and complain (in a very civil manner, no squeaky wheel here). They tell me that there is no way that I was told that in the first place, so I told them to go and listen to the tape. They tell me that it is too late to arrange anyway, but (and they kept me on the phone for ages to do this) they finally upgraded my wife and I both to preferred seating. Again, frustrated but whatever....stuff happens.

So, the day comes and we are off to the airport. We get to the gate and I look at our boarding passes and the they are still for our original seats in Row 37 or something. I tell them that we have been upgraded to Row 13 and she looks at me and tells me that is impossible. I tell her the story and she says (after a bunch of back and forth) that she will move us into preferred but that we can't sit together. I say ok (not sure why) and I go and tell my wife....and she doesn't like that we won't be together so I go back to the GA and she has given away our original seats. So now we are stuck apart.

Now kind of pissed off, but who cares, right? Off to Cancun for some fun!!

So, we get into Cancun and we cannot find anyone from AC for the shuttle to our hotel. We talk to the cabs and they are trying to gouge us for $100 US (what a crock of crap). We finally go with a shuttle for $30 US.

When we arrive at the Oasis Sens (in bad need of a cocktail) the concierge tells us that we are not in his list, but no worries....see the front desk. I wander over to the front desk and he asks for my paperwork....I give him the paperwork that ACV sent me (all printed in full) and he tells me that they have missed something. No proper paperwork. He looks at the bookings and we are not listed.

Still going to be fine, right? So I call ACV from the Mexico number listed in the paperwork that they do give me and it isn't working. The hotel tried to call five times and every time, the line goes dead.

Finally the front desk calls somebody from the vacation group that looks after ACV and he tells me that we are booked at Grand Oasis. Like, ...?? Not a chance. He tells me that Sens is booked full and there is zero chance we get in that day but that we could try again the next day from Grand Oasis.

He calls Grand Oasis and tells us that a shuttle will be right over to pick us up. Ok, fuming at this point, but what can I do? This is my honeymoon so I am trying to stay calm because I know how important this is to my wife. We wait 45 minutes....and then the rep comes over and says 'the hotel didn't send anyone, you need to take a cab there'. How frustrating. Another $15 US and we arrive at the hotel and they are great....except that they stick us in the worst room in the entire (humongous) complex. Right in the back corner above the loading dock....it was freaking terrible!

I go back to the front desk to tell them that this is unacceptable and they tell me that 'you didn't spend enough to get a decent room'. Funny though, because we later found out others had booked at the same place for over $1000 cheaper per couple. I demand a room at the original hotel, the Grand Sens and am basically told to go blow a goat.

I tried for three consecutive mornings to change hotels and I tried for three mornings to get a better room and they were not doing a damn thing.

What really gets me is that this was all during American spring break. The Grand Oasis is a ridiculous party hotel and we didn't want anything to do with that. I am a 43 year old guy that just wanted some peace and quiet with my new wife. The hotel leaked the entire week. There were kids passed out in hallways, kids trying to start fights all over the place, drug dealers all over us any time we walked on the beach past dark....it was anything but the trip we envisioned.

Upon arriving home I called ACV and went into this long narrative. The first thing they did was to retrieve my original call and they confirmed that the agent had told me that we could upgrade AND more importantly that we had asked for the Oasis Sens adults only resort (where not of this bs was happening).

I have dealt with them onthis for 7 weeks and I have been super easy going about everything. I have been kind and courteous when I could have been shouting.

AC has now made me an offer of $1600 to go back on my CC. I think this is still somewhat insulting as they put me at a resort that I did not want to be at and that I would never have booked (and I can't tell you how many things went wrong during that week, including a somewhat serious injury to me from a faulty window).

Today I countered with two offers:

1. An all inclusive vacation for two to a high end property with J-class tix for a week, good for 24 months.

2. $2400 back on my CC.

I am not sure why I am writing all of this. Maybe lookin for some input? Does anyone feel like I am being outrageous?

Maybe I just needed to voice my frustration. Thoughts? Am I asking for too much? What is my best line of action here to feel like I am getting the best possible outcome?

Frankly I feel like I should not have paid a dime for the shot we went through. I mean, what is my time worth?? The time I have spent on this since we got back? The time we spent down there upset.
