Were both credit cards--the one you used at check in and the expired one--from the same bank or whatever?
It shouldn't surprise a hotel that sometimes a credit card expires or is cancelled due to no fault of the cardholder between the time a reservation is made and when the guest arrives. By not charging nonrefundable reservations immediately, they almost ask to have problems with cards that were valid at the time but are not valid many months later.
