Hotels in Vancouver proper are very expensive in the summer. Even budget properties will be $200+. Unfortunately that's just how it is, Vancouver is a small city that gets a ton of tourist traffic during a few months of the year.

I second gglave's advice to look out in the suburbs along the SkyTrain lines. There is no point paying $100-150 extra to stay in Vancouver if you are travelling on a budget.
