I'd look at heading out to the suburbs, where prices drop dramatically.

For example this place is five minutes from a SkyTrain station (Gateway Station) -

It's 35 minutes to downtown on the train and the fare is $5.50 CAD, or a daypass is $9.75 CAD.

If you look at the Expo and Millennium SkyTrain lines on Google Maps, you can search for hotels near the stations.

Here's another example, near the Holdom SkyTrain station in the suburb of Burnaby -

...20 minutes to downtown on the Train (change trains at Commercial / Broadway).

As for the Okanagan, I wouldn't attempt it without a car, particularly if you want to visit some wineries.
