Help with flight passes

I have recently bought Flight passes for Europe/Morocco through Air Canada in latitude fare. We were assured by two agents, prior to purchasing, that the flights could be upgraded with Star Alliance points or eupgrades. The site also states this. Aeroplan suggests that it would be 20K each way to upgrade to Latitude. They couldn't make it work although they saw 13 available seats for a flight in 6 days from now. 3 calls to Air Canada and 1 agent said no only people on other airlines can use the Star Alliance points, not Air Canada members, 1 said we could use them and then checked with someone else and said we couldn't, another call tonight and we were told we could. Back to Aeroplan who says we can do it but they don't understand why the seats aren't released. There are Aeroplan upgrades available but not necessarily Star Alliance upgrades at 20K per ticket. Has anyone ever encountered this before? We are going back to England for my Uncle's funeral, overnight next Tuesday, and don't have enough upgrades but tons of Aeroplan miles. Very frustrated with so many different stories. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
