I see these nonstop flights with nice lie-flat beds which are virtually wide open, and no R seats. If I book W-class fares, I have to waitlist. And from what I'm hearing, there may be a chance that we might never get upgraded from Econo+.
What to do? Just pay the little extra for W fares and apply the GPUs and hope and pray?
Update: I was able to find R space for this HNL-NRT flight in September, at a very reasonable W fare. I will be using 3 GPUs to upgrade the ride home. And what's even better? The outbound is a W fare with R space too. But I haven't decided whether I will be upgrading the outbound too. If I do, I will be using all six GPUs for the round trip for the three of us. I have to figure out if I'm going to have use for 3 GPUs for myself (and maybe a friend) for a potential international flight later in the year. I'm leaning towards pressing the upgrade button and treating my family on this NRT trip right now, because some of these W fares to Europe, or Australia/NZ (where I'd like to go) are outrageous. I might not be able to even use the GPUs elsewhere. Some of the stories that I've read on FlyerTalk for non-use of the GPUs are scary. I'll have to decide soon.
