Was there something that prevented these passengers from finding (and paying for) their own hotel rooms near NRT? Canadians should be able to enter Japan without visas and, in fact, apparently did go landside to sleep in the baggage claim area. Or did AC tell them not to leave the airport or that no rooms were available anywhere reasonably close to the airport or public transportation at that area? I'm not sure when the last Friendly Airport LimoBus leaves T1 for TCAT or Tokyo Station. Airport hotels at NRT have limited shuttle service, although Narita village has public transportation which again must close down late at night. Taxi fares in the immediate airport area can't be too horrible, although one might need yen in cash to pay for transportation.
