I few weeks ago when I was connecting through DTW the GA made an announcement something along the lines of "If you are on the upgrade list and think you might be upgraded do not board the aircraft". I was already upgraded and I went up to talk to them about it and they were clearly using the "you board you lose" and confirmed it with me. They said they were doing it to get the aircraft out on time and moving people around takes away from that.
