It's a whole lot cheaper for me to book myself on a return flight SFO-SYD-SFO - $2200 vs $2800 one-way. But I want to ensure that my wife, daughter and I are seated together on their one-way to SFO, even though we'll be on different bookings.

Would it be 'legit' to book the whole family on a return trip SFO-SYD-SFO and not have them on the SFO-SYD leg? Seems this would be cheaper, but don't want to cause any problems later on.

Can anyone recommend the most cost effective and headache free way to do this?

Thanks,
Patrick.
og is correct.

you can easily sit the whole family together by paying for specific seat allocation. They may not be able to sit with you in your platinum allocation, but you'll be able to pick other seats.
