LAX >Pvg, 4 hour layover.
PVG>Hkg where we will spend 2.5 days in Hkg.
HKG>PVG where we plan to spend 3.5 days, which is where we hope to take advantage of the waiver.
PVG>LAX to return home.

We all hold USA passports. My concern is we do not qualify because we are flying thru PVG to get to Hong Kong and it's on the return leg that we want to use the 144 hour waiver.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We travel in June so I want to sort this out soon if we need to apply for traditional visas.
You have two legal TWOV transits here although I would be skittish about that first connect.
