I often ask the same question, and in numerous situations. There's one level of delay - "oh, you need a card to pay for all this stuff", as I'm in the checkout line - and then there's a level of "are you attempting a leveraged buyout of the company via the check-in process" that is more frustrating.
I can't recall ever taking more than 3-5 minutes checking-in to a hotel.
