Travelling together on multiple bookings

Hi all,
Wanted to reach out for some tips how how best to handle the following situation.

My wife and daughter will be moving to San Francisco from Sydney on 31/07/16. I'll already be living in SF and will fly back to help with their flight.

It's a whole lot cheaper for me to book myself on a return flight SFO-SYD-SFO - $2200 vs $2800 one-way. But I want to ensure that my wife, daughter and I are seated together on their one-way to SFO, even though we'll be on different bookings.

Would it be 'legit' to book the whole family on a return trip SFO-SYD-SFO and not have them on the SFO-SYD leg? Seems this would be cheaper, but don't want to cause any problems later on.

Can anyone recommend the most cost effective and headache free way to do this?

Thanks,
Patrick.
