Well, I was told just that today by a GGL agent. I had a WT booking for our daughter, TLV-LHR-JFK-LHR-TLV. Paid by avios + cash supplement to reduce the number of avios required. Decided to treat her to WT+ and use a joker + GUF1 to upgrade her. Phoned the GGL line and was told the original booking would need to be cancelled and a new one made as a pure avios booking without the cash supplement. It cost me about 20,000 more avios than before, although I saved a good deal of cash instead ...
