Fare class doesn't matter when confirmed in FC. As long as there's a seat in the premium cabin, and the routing is valid, you can make the change.
Some agents aren't properly trained, so it may take several calls, but I've never had any problems when traveling on a G fare. The online change menu is very limited, and won't show you all the possibilities.
