The MD88 and MD90 planes are much longer, up to 23 feet longer in the case of the MD90, which seats 172 passengers in some cases. By contrast, the 717-200 only seats 117 (105 coach + 12 first class) passengers, and is a significantly smaller and lighter aircraft.

The 717-200 is a McDonnell Douglass design, based on the smaller version of the original (smaller)DC-9-30, but with newer avionics and fly by wire gizmos. By contrast, he MD88/90 planes were based on the larger DC-9-90.
There is no such thing as a DC9-90. It was always an MD90. The MD80, MD90, and 717 are all derivatives of the DC-9. However, they have different fuselage lengths and different engines. The MD80s have the P&W JT8D engine. The MD90s have IAE V2500 engines, which are bigger, more powerful, and quieter than the JT8D. The 717 has the Rolls-Royce BR700 engine. But, the interior for all these planes are all the same. The all have bins that are narrower on the 2 seat side and can take a roller bag lengthwise on the 3 seat side. The CRJ-900 have tiny bins that don't fit all roller bags in any configuration.
