My wife and I were lucky enough to be able to take advantage of her brother's AA scheme around 10 years ago. He also gave me access to his employee account so I could check availability, loadings, etc before making a decision.
It was all done on a standby basis so we tended to travel on a Tuesday when loadings were often quite low.
We enjoyed a number of trips in J & F between LHR and ORD/LAX all for a few hundred dollars. Great experiences.
