Unfortunately it does. I got my car window (rear left hadn seat) smashed whilst driving through, having stupidly exited there, and a bag nicked. it contained only some refreshments for the day, but it was scary nonetheless, considering it was day and I was actually driving the car. It took only the time of stopping at a red light.
According to the police it can happen frequently, especially for foreign-plated cars (mine was rented in Switzerland), and mostly is for the sat-nav (which I obviously didn't have, or I wouldn't have driven into the cite!)
