Looking to fly from the UK to Sydney, they could not even advise me of a time in the year (or provide a past example), where it was cheaper than buying two economy saver tickets. They even tried to give me a date 10mths in advance, but then found the return segment was not available until 3months later, and on top of that it was still cheaper to buy 2 x Saver tickets, than use the "free companion ticket".
Will definitely be cancelling the card asap, and avoiding any promotions from Emirates.
The companion offer is not of much use for Economy. Even for Business its not great as you have to buy a Flex J to get the companion award ( for which you have to again pay the taxes anyway) and the current J savers on the routes that I take ( UK to the subcontinent ) are quite good.
The companion fareholder will.not get the tier or skywards miles either.
It is however still good when I travel in J with someone who does not travel much on EK . The total cost of the two tickets ( Flex J and the companions award ) is cheaper than two J savers . The tier miles /skywards miles for the companion do not matter in this case .
Plus I get the Flex J tier and skywards miles as well.
