These particular roads in South Africa are very well maintained. In some cases, there are divided roads; in other cases there are broad shoulders. The Garden Route is pretty, but blander than we anticipated. We stopped in Mossel Bai, Knysna, and Plett. Outside Port Elizabeth, Addo Elephant Reserve is a must. Stay in the park and take both the night and morning ranger drives. There is a water hole near the chalets with spotlights; it is a great place to sit and watch elephants. </font>
Glad to hear you enjoyed driving in South Africa. Preliminary reports suggest that the number of road fatalities over the Christmas holidays may be lower than last year (statistics are unreliable. There are indications that road death may be underreported by up to 50%).
Addo is indeed a gem, arguably the best place in Africa to observe relaxed elephants at very close quarters. With the rapid addition of more land, great biological variety, scenic diversity and the recent reintroduction of lions, Addo has the potentional to become a fabulous game viewing destination.
