Then again, I don't think I've ever cancelled a card more than 37 days after the AF hit, so I'm just going off what I've read.
After Citi implemented the 18-month language, I had two Citi AA Visas that seemed to be in danger of being auto-converted to MCs (and thus subject to the 18-month language, which as Visas they weren't). So I cancelled both of them mid-year. I got a prorated AF refund on both of them, even though I had gotten a full statement credit from a retention bonus half a year or so earlier! ^ This is an example of why Citi's tendency to give statement credits (rather the outright waive the AF) as a retention bonus is better, because you can then get the prorated AF back because it was technically paid, whereas if it had been waived there would nothing to prorate.
