If you're willing to do a connection, OW and Skyteam have good fares out of a *A hub. Not ideal with a baby, but something to consider.
Also if the "plan to collect to redeem" involves funding future FRA-YYZ trips, might as well forget it. As others have noted, you can collect AP points much more cheaply via other means (a credit card). AND the YQ on that route is insane because it involves AC and LH as only (nonstop) options. Since it doesn't sound like you're SE anymore...then no soup for you on waiving the YQ!
I recently checked LH and you're right its sometimes cheaper one of the flights I checked was about $120 cheaper. But I noticed that at the LH website they only have very limited # seats for AC Flights.
For now no connection but would consider it later once the baby is no longer a baby
I was never SE but was close. I have redeemed FRA-YYZ flights in J few times and its always annoying to pay about $1000 YQ in LH/AC flights! Next time we will use it go on vacation somewhere in Asia or Australia in J/F with another SA airline.

How do you get around that if your wife lives in Germany?
It seems to be a trade-off between the lower AQD requirement for non-resident of Canada and the eligibility to use a FP.
(I have had no problem using FP credits since changing my residence to non-Canada, but bought the FP back in 2015, and when it runs out of credits, I worry about purchasing my next FP.)
Would like to know how this works for you the past couple years.
Note: Not my wife
Strange I have never seen that, maybe perhaps its a NA FP? The only "major" requirement I read for the FP was the purchaser must be a Canadian resident. I read all the information T&C in the page but I didn't read it after I purchased the FP if its different. I could have missed that clause. But never read about the other user must be a Canadian Resident.
However I have never had any issues booking her flight from FRA-YYZ-FRA, at least 4 RT flights.
Only issue I had was they charged me $250 for an infant and the ticket was $1400 RT! And AC CS in FRA couldn't do the change and I had to call Canada for this! They never said or asked anything about it.
Currently we haven't bought a new FP this year since soon the baby will be 2 yrs old and were checking our options. So far this year I flew and she booked Premium Economy. Which currently there's no PY FP for Eastern Canada EU.
For you it could be different since you are the purchaser and you no longer live in Canada.
