I don't think the "highway" between Guilin and Yangshuo has been improved much, so that it's still about a 1.5 hour drive each way. A daytrip from Guilin is definitely doable, but depending on what you want to see and do in Yangshuo, imo it's better to spend at least a night there.
The highway isn't too bad but the onramps seem to be quite a way from the cities. Took about 70 minutes from the outskirts of YangShuo (nearer the highway entry point) to GuiLin North station. That said, I still 2nd staying in YangShuo over GuiLin.
GuiLin does have some thing to see but the better views are nearer YangShuo.
