Azq: Have you been to Italy before and will you be driving or taking the train to Florence?

Like Antonio, I would also fly into Rome and see Rome because it is so wonderful. However, you might be thinking to save Rome to share with your girlfriend.

If you drive you can concentrate on smaller villages and towns and traverse the countryside which is lovely. All you need then is a good map.

If training, I would suggest visiting some larger cities where it is cumbersome to have a vehicle. Siena is very nice.
