The hotel reservation desk in the arrivals area at FCO has a hotel shuttle service that leaves, oh, every half hour or so. Cost is around, oh, EUR 8 or so, and they'll take you to any hotel in central Rome. Passenger traffic is still light at 0830 in the morning and you could very well end up being the only passenger, as I was last time I arrived at FCO at that time. I highly recommend the service - one-seat, door-to-door transportation that is prompt and efficient, for less than the cost of the train and far less than a taxi.

P.S. You don't need to make a reservation at the desk in order to use the shuttle. They will ask if you have a reservation at this hotel you're going to, but just say "Yes" and that will be that.

Were you already reserved in a hotel in Rome? Were you the only passenger on the shuttle?
I'm sorry but I am a bit perplexed because I can not figure out how a private company (shuttle service it's not a public one, but closely related to the price someone pays for hotel reservation and the services his accomodation give him) can be competitive, cheaper and more reliable to taxi (30euro a trip) and mass-transportation (train ticket swaps from 4.70 to 8.80).
If it's a courtesy service from your hotel you don't have to pay at all; if not, it would be hard to believe that you can pay 1/4 of a taxi ride, just because you have got a reservation in a roman hotel, and in most cases without proving it.
What are cab drivers doing at FCO, then?
