Perhaps I think it may be fair to say "Why was NRT" as a lot of the US airlines are moving away from NRT in favor of direct US - Asian cities.

DL got rid of NRT- many Asian city pairs and after UA cuts NRT-SIN route, the only one UA has left will be NRT-ICN.

DL wanted to split TPAC flights with KE as a JV - similar to what they have with AF/KL. There was no way KE would agree to that given that the majority of their revenue came from ICN-USA
