I'm pretty sure they don't let you key in is to prevent people earning from other people's purchases. Since a lot of people don't have a status, this would be easy to do otherwise.
And I have to use my card all the time, especially when flying domestically here on AA. It'll be printed on my boarding pass, but it just won't pull up when they scan it. This is usually a problem only when I'm trying to access the [FCL] Flagship Lounge oppose to the regular Admirals Club.
