I get that pushing a medallion up to full Y might be "unfair" to passengers already on the upgrade list, but I see this as a potential consolation to having to deal with a long delay or cancellation. I recently asked to be bumped up to full Y during a VDB situation, and the agent was happy to do so.
I'm not an IT person so don't know how hard it would be to implement, but they already do split apart 'class bought' and class flown' for FF accrual purposes- getting pushed from deep discount fare to Y during an IRROPS event no longer triggers any mileage bonuses.

Can they tweak the software so that the upgrade list points to 'class bought' rather than 'class flown'? As someone who has had IRROPS where the only inventory solution was to get pushed into a Y fare seat, I'd hate to have it harder for GAs to make that change, especially during those messy ATL ground stop situations when service recovery is an unholy mess.
