I've never had to input passport/ID card information (and indeed, a search on the Vietnam Airlines website just now backs this up). The Vietnam Airlines website merely invites you to enter passport information, so that they don't have to do it at checkin.

So just don't enter the details, and you should be fine.

Of course, if you're booking through a third party, this advice may not apply, and they might decide they want passport details.
