Not meaning to hijack the OP's thread, however I might have a similar question with my situation.
Having never flown internationally I have no experience.
Returning to the US from LHR connecting at ORD and then on to MCI.
I just assumed we'd (wife & daughter along) check our luggage at Heathrow and pickup in Kansas City.
I'm sensing that's wrong in this case?
