Am I crazy to think of driving up the coast to Cairns? Or fly/train to Brisbane and drive to Cairns? (I know it's 2500+ km.) I'd be interested in opinions on nice places to stop and look around on the drive.
If it was me, I'd drive to the Sunshine Coast from Sydney, visit Fraser Island, then fly the rest of the way up to Cairns. The drive is slow, although it's an A road it's single carriageway north of Brisbane.
