If Macy's wasn't forcing EMV debit cards to run through debit networks, I would think the screen would have displayed two buttons. I didn't try pressing Cancel when I entered the PIN, since I didn't want to risk cancelling the transaction and delaying the line. The PIN screen made no mention of pressing Cancel for Credit.
Target doesn't display any buttons yet you can cancel out the PIN prompt for debit cards by pushing the Cancel button--even with EMV. It's actually a pretty common way of doing it.
Speaking of which, apparently Kohl's displays a credit/debit prompt even when one inserts an obvious credit card. (And I thought they did Apple Pay too but the prompt only says "insert/swipe". Something extra the cashier needs to push or would it have worked anyway if I attempted?)
