I've stayed at the Novotel on Broad Street 4-5 times a year for the past few years and your review is spot on!

I've sometimes dipped in to the Hilton Garden Inn which sits behind the Novotel and whilst the HGI is newer (and maybe a little smarter), I keep going back to the Novotel mainly due to their fantastic and personal (genuine) service.

They are also really good at welcoming returning guests back and rewarding Le Club Accor members - always got upgrades, drinks vouchers and treats in room http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone - Birmingham isn't blessed with many upscale hotels - it could do with an MGallery or Sofitel!
