I think they met the room type guarantee, which is really a bed type guarantee. You were downgraded from a suite, but you still received a king bed. I do, however, think that you should be charged less for your first night. You should not be required to pay the suite rate for a standard room.
The OP is outside the US/Canada where the guarantee is for bed type. The general benefit is "room/bed preferences". The property did not meet the guarantee. The terms do appear to contain conflicts.
