CP Zuid still will upgrade Platinum (pre July 2015) or Spire (introduced July2015) to their J/suite if unsold, and I sometimes(not always) see upgrade online the night before.
Would suspect that paid Spires rank before award night spires for the upgrade, and most of my stays are paid.

I mostly book paid here, but if busy and rates high, I have used award night and still got the J/S upgrade. In my 10+ Stays here, only once did I not get a J/S

Very generous with early checkin for me too, even on my first visit , when I asked reception to leave my suitcase at 09:30am, I got given room right away instead.

Club Lounge is not given for free here (or CP Amsterdam Center), I either book b/f rate or buy at reception during checkin for a discount over adding/signing to my room in restaurant in the morning.
