My plan for touring the Old City (even though it is very easy to walk for most) is to taxi back & forth from hotel to Gutenberg Museum and utilize the little tourist train that runs from there...so HDW would be a great place for a meal!

Walking, especially on cobblestones, is a big problem for my husband and Mainz will be just the start of a month-long trip so we need to be careful! We plan to visit Weisbaden for a day as they also have a tourist train that covers the whole city.
