Booking open jaws is fine. If you want to change an exitisng booking however the old and new airport needs to be in teh same zone. You have been correctly advised.
There are of course options to get between HKG and SIN using avios with CX and MH.

Agent is right that they are in different zones (15,000 Avios difference in Club Class). Not sure if it is possible, but I would call and see if you can pay the additional Avios (and any fees and taxes). Good luck.

Karfa is correct as usual. While you can book an open jaw return booking (including using a 241), you cannot change a return booking (including a 241) to a different zone.
