Traditionally, the first car in passenger trains has the highest risk in an accident/derailment. This has been true with Amtrak as well:
2016 Chester accident--most damage to first car of train--no fatalities.
2015 Frankford Jct. accident--most damage to first car of train--multiple fatalities.
1987 Gunpowder accident--most damage to first car of train--multiple fatalities.
Amtrak is making this move for safety reasons. Daze
