You will not be forced to pay for a preferred seat. You'll be assigned an open seat. AA holds a LOT of seats as "Preferred" seats that really aren't much more than a window seat or one toward the front of the plane. You will very likely not receive a "Main Cabin Extra" seat, but a "Preferred" seat can totally end up yours.
