The connection time may not be legal. If not legal, then CX will refuse to tag the bag through if on two separate tickets. If trying to book as one ticket when the connecting time is insufficient, the ticket will not be issued. Even if it's barely legal, if ended up stuck in a large crowd of arrivals, regardless whether the OP can use whichever line through immigration, 1 hour and half is not going to be sufficient. I know for a fact domestic to international connection in JFK is 1 hour and 15 minutes minimum. International to international (JFK to YUL is considered international but YUL to JFK is considered domestic) is most definitely not enough.
